Interiors built to spec
Book Formatting & Typesetting
Nothing marks a self-published book faster than its interior. Wrong margins, a default font, and widowed lines tell a reader the book was not taken seriously.
The approach
A typeset page should be invisible. If the reader notices the layout, something has gone wrong.
Print typesetting is a craft with real rules: gutter margins that account for binding, running heads that do not fight the text, and no orphan lines stranded at the top of a page. We set books the way trade publishers do.
Ebook formatting is a different discipline entirely. Reflowable text has to survive any font size on any device, which means proper semantic markup rather than hard-coded layout.
What is included

- Widow and orphan control throughout
- Reflowable EPUB 3 with a working navigable table of contents
- Kindle-specific file generation and preview testing
- Image placement at correct print resolution
- Files validated against each retailer before handover
The process
How this
actually runs.
Five stages, each gated by your approval. You will always know what happens next and what it costs.
Start the conversationSpecification
Trim size, binding, paper stock and the retailers you are publishing through.
Type design
Typeface pairing, measure and leading chosen for your genre and page count.
Print typeset
Full interior set, with pagination and page-break decisions made by hand.
Ebook build
A separate reflowable EPUB with semantic structure, tested across devices.
Validation
Files run through each retailer’s validator and corrected before you ever upload.
Questions
The things
authors ask first.
If your question is not here, ask it on the consultation call — we would rather answer it before you commit than after.
Yes, Word is the normal starting point. We also take Google Docs, Scrivener and plain markdown.
Templates cannot make the judgement calls — where a chapter should break, how to fix a stranded line, how to handle a long table. Those decisions are most of the work.
It depends on genre and page count. 6×9 inches suits most non-fiction, 5.5×8.5 reads better for memoir and fiction. We will recommend based on your manuscript.
Yes, including full-colour interiors, though these have real cost implications for print that we will walk you through before you commit.
It should not happen, because we validate before handover. If it does, we fix it at no charge.
