Turn a life into a book

Memoir & Life Story Writing

A life is not a book. A life is chronological, repetitive, and full of people the reader has not met. Turning one into the other is a craft, and it is the one we are asked for most.

The approach

The hardest part of a memoir is deciding what to leave out.

Most people arrive with everything that happened and no sense of which parts a stranger would care about. Our memoir writers are trained to find the spine — the one change, decision or loss the book is really circling — and to build around it.

We interview gently and at your pace. Difficult chapters are approached carefully, and nothing goes in that you have not read and approved.

What is included

  • Sensitive, paced interviewing over video or phone
  • Thematic structuring rather than plain chronology
  • Photograph and document integration where you want it
  • Family-tree and timeline research assistance
  • Guidance on writing about living people, and what to soften
  • Private family editions as well as retail publishing
  • Complete confidentiality, enforced by NDA

The process

How this
actually runs.

Five stages, each gated by your approval. You will always know what happens next and what it costs.

Start the conversation
01

Listening session

An unstructured first conversation. No agenda, no outline — we are finding the shape of the thing.

02

Timeline and theme

We assemble a factual timeline, then identify the two or three threads worth building the book around.

03

Interview programme

Weekly sessions working through each era, recorded so your phrasing is preserved.

04

Drafting in your voice

Chapters arrive weekly. You correct facts and feeling; we handle structure and prose.

05

Print and legacy editions

A retail edition if you want readers, a hardcover family run if you want heirlooms, or both.

Questions

The things
authors ask first.

If your question is not here, ask it on the consultation call — we would rather answer it before you commit than after.

Memoir does not sell on fame, it sells on specificity. A well-told account of one ordinary immigrant childhood will outread a vague celebrity autobiography. The question is not whether your life was remarkable, but whether the telling is honest and particular.

Carefully, and we will advise you. We flag passages that create legal or personal exposure, suggest alternatives, and recommend a legal read for anything genuinely contentious. The final call is always yours.

That happens in most memoir projects and our writers are used to it. Sessions move at your pace, pause when you need, and can be rescheduled without penalty.

Yes, and roughly a third of our memoir clients choose exactly that. We produce short hardcover runs with no retail listing and no public record of the book at all.

Normal, and not a problem. We cross-check against public records, newspapers and family documents where we can, and where we cannot the book says so honestly.
